The King's Singers Summer School at DePauw

June 13-19, 2017

The Summer Schools are a unique opportunity to work with one of the world’s leading a cappella groups in a fun and supportive environment.  Whether you are attending with your ensemble or as an individual to be placed within a group at the start of the School, you will be fully immersed in music, honing your skills and helping you to enjoy a lifetime of singing at a higher level than you may have ever imagined.

The King’s Singers’ craft can be distilled into one over-riding concept: listening. This will be the focus of the Summer Schools; how to listen, adapt to what we hear, and communicate the text of any song, whatever its language or style, to an audience. Through better listening, ensembles can achieve a sound that is more balanced, blended, and leads to a more enjoyable experience for performers and listeners alike.

Each Summer School has a structure based on tuition with an individual King’s Singer, together with joint workshops, performance opportunities and organized social activities.

In the U.S., the group are delighted that Bob Chilcott, former King’s Singer tenor and world-renowned composer, has agreed to join for this Summer School. Bob has cemented a position as one of the most sought-after contemporary choral clinicians and will be leading workshop sessions on choral direction and the interpretation of his music, as well as sharing his experiences as a King’s Singer and how the group’s approach has helped to shape his musical life.

Those of you returning to the Summer School will know just how much importance we place on its culture – there’s always a special atmosphere created by people who, like the K.S., just love singing!

Special guest clinician: Bob Chilcott… “a contemporary hero of British Choral Music” The Observer

Be prepared to be energized, captivated & inspired as our good friend, and former King’s Singer Bob Chilcott - one of the most inspiring composers, conductors, clinicians and workshop leaders of our day - joins us in DePauw to lead sessions and workshops during the Summer School.  Committed to writing music which is both “singable and communicative” Bob will share wisdom garnered from years of composing, singing and working with ensembles, guiding us through some of his most extraordinary ensemble pieces.

This inaugural U.S. Summer School will take place at DePauw University, Indiana. The thriving music department is deeply committed to reshaping modern music education, which is reflected in the facilities it offers. One of the first Schools of Music in the United States, in June 2015 the campus was host to the first-ever Global Musician Workshop, led by the phenomenal cellist Yo Yo Ma and members of his renowned Silk Road Ensemble.

Ahead of the first U.S. School, Mark McCoy, Dean, DePauw University School of Music says “We are thrilled to partner with one of the world's best and most-loved musical groups for this unforgettable, life-changing experience. If you love singing, this is the place to be!”

How to Apply

To apply for your place on the Summer Schools, complete and submit the application form supplying all the relevant information along with your audition file. Your application will not be considered by The King’s Singers until the completed form and audition file have both been received. All applications will be assessed as and when they are received, and places given on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please note, we are only able to accept applications from those who will be age 16 years or over on the first day of the Summer School which you wish to attend.

Applicants under 18 years of age on the day of application are required to provide contact details for a parent or responsible guardian. Before an Applicant aged under 18 can be accepted to the Summer School, a completed parental consent form will be required. This will be sent following the submission of the application form.

We require every new applicant to submit an audition in the form of a recently-recorded audio track. We ask you to submit a recording singing an a cappella English folk song—the choice of song is up to you! However for some inspiration, do take a look at The King's Singers collection of folk songs in the KS Shop.

Please upload your audio file to the Dropbox link supplied in the application form, before submitting. We request that auditions are sent as mp3s not exceeding 10MB clearly labelled with your full name or ensemble name.

You will not be judged on the sound or technical quality of your recording. Your folksong can be recorded on your smartphone (Voice Memos on iOS for example) or via the built-in microphone on your laptop or computer.

If you are a returning Summer School participant you do not have to submit an audio recording by way of audition, but you do need to complete the application form in full.

By completing and submitting your application you hereby agree to the full terms and conditions of The King’s Singers Summer School.
